Carmen the farmyard cat is no stranger to enthusiastic beagles or excited new pups; both she and the curios Dante have a mutual understanding.
Here on the homestead we are very familiar with those first puppy-cat meetings and with a little human intervention– peace between cats and dogs is kept on the homestead.
Pup Visit! -Tikka in Seattle
Upon opening the door I was met with a beautiful red-gold Retriever. Her deep brown eyes shown with enthusiasm. She was definitely excited to see me, but so polite and impeccably well mannered that instead of rambunctious jumps and muddy paws all over my white sweatshirt she contained her joy in a tremendously wagging tail and a happy nose greeting.
I was awed at such a calm, elegant greeting from a 6 month old pup! Tikka was splendid!
Last week I had the great joy of visiting one of our Puppy families in Seattle. The Kreft family of 6 had welcomed into their home one of Penny’s pups “ Tikka” last November. It isn’t everyday that I get to visit my pups as they grow up. And I was overjoyed to witness Tikka’s exceptional development.

Gingerbread doesn’t have a spectacular history, (originating in Greece and becoming popular in Germany via Hansel and Gretel) and it’s not my first choice of cookie. But, for some reason, every year at Christmas time our family delights in building a gingerbread house, or more precisely, a village! Why? Is it because there is a certain joy in baking some cookies, gluing them together with icing and coating them with sweets? Yes, but there is more joy because it is a family event -a special time we all do something together.

I have spent a lot of winter days reading chicken blogs, devising the earliest incubation dates for the eggs, reminding the Little Boys to remember to do their chicken chores. A common joke of mine is that “Chickens are a Gateway drug” to harder farm life – goats, cows, rabbits etc… The Internet tells me how nice it is to have chickens supply manure for your garden, to eat bugs in your orchard, and provide healthy, natural eggs for your table. All of these tenets I can honestly, heartily support.

Every week Friday rolls along and our family gets excited about Pizza night. It’s a time where we all work together to get pizza ready by six’ o clock . Everyone has a job. One sister makes the dough, then Mother rolls out the crusts, Katherine shapes and tops the breadsticks, Matthew pours soda, while the little kids wander into the kitchen making movie suggestions.
Once the first pizza is out, everyone comes and grabs a deliciously hot slice and a cup of ice cold root beer and sits down to watch a family movie. It is an enjoyable time for everyone – even Nana comes over!

No homestead is complete without a chicken coop, and we had been without one for far too long! With the little kids getting older we wanted to revisit incubation, and chick raising, and impetuously brought home 25 Barred Rock chicks. The feathered fowl flourished under the kids’ abundant attention, and eventually got to that obnoxious age when they had outgrown their little coop, and rudely disturbed the landscaping and pooped on the porch! Once again, the urgent need for infrastructure made itself evident. We needed a new coop! It needed to be mobile, secure, and of course pretty! Continue reading “The Chicken Coop”
