“Oh little town of Rosehaven”

Gingerbread doesn’t have a spectacular history, (originating in Greece and becoming popular in Germany via Hansel and Gretel) and it’s not my first choice of cookie. But, for some reason, every year at Christmas time our family delights in building a gingerbread house, or more precisely, a village! Why? Is it because there is a certain joy in baking some cookies, gluing them together with icing and coating them with sweets? Yes, but there is more joy because it is a family event -a special time we all do something together.

Chickens on the Move

I have spent a lot of winter days reading chicken blogs, devising the earliest incubation dates for the eggs, reminding the Little Boys to remember to do their chicken chores. A common joke of mine is that “Chickens are a Gateway drug” to harder farm life – goats, cows, rabbits etc… The Internet tells me how nice it is to have chickens supply manure for your garden, to eat bugs in your orchard, and provide healthy, natural eggs for your table. All of these tenets I can honestly, heartily support.

Pizza Night!

Every week Friday rolls along and our family gets excited about Pizza night. It’s a time where we all work together to get pizza ready by six’ o clock .  Everyone has a job. One sister makes the dough, then Mother rolls out the crusts, Katherine shapes and tops the breadsticks, Matthew pours soda, while the little kids wander into the kitchen making movie suggestions.

Once the first pizza is out, everyone comes and grabs a deliciously hot slice and a cup of ice cold root beer and sits down to watch a family movie. It is an enjoyable time for everyone – even Nana comes over!

A Wild Beagle Adventure!

The sun shown brightly and the air was cool. Leading my beagles to their kennels, I passed through an open place in the barnyard. The black cat “Mustache”, named after the vibrant white mustache that continually grinned, was in the opening looking quite smug. Duke and Dahlia darted after him ignoring the primary desire of breakfast, and passed into the nearby field in their chase. Once they tired of the sport and Mustache gave up, they went on to obey my call and return to the kennel. Rather annoyed, I waited impatiently for the rascally beagles to rejoin me. Faithful old Daisy kept by my side not desiring to join in the youth’s enthusiastic chase.
