Every homeschooler loves to read, right? Well, as a 14 year old girl, I do too, and here are my four ABSOLUTE. FAVORITE. fiction books!

Anne Of Green Gables

Of course this girl’s classic by Lucy Montgomery is on the list. I’ve read all 7 books – 3 times! The story follows the life of the orphaned, redhead Anne. Many entertaining misadventures befall her due to the curious nature of a young girl, and then you watch as she matures into a young lady with her own family. Because of the delightfully descriptive words, and its excellent writing style, it counts as being educational… right? There is also a great movie you can watch after reading the books as a bonus!

King Of The Wind

Marguerite Henry, the notable author of several beloved animal stories, wrote another excellent horse book, “King of the Wind”, which I like most of all her stories.  It’s a historical fiction that follows the riveting tale of the mute Moroccan stable boy, “Agba” and Sham, the beautiful spirited Arabian stallion Agba raised from a colt. Sham is the origin of the breed of racing thoroughbred horses.  I love how well the story is written, and I have lots of good memories of Mom reading this book to us when we were little.  It was always fascinating.

Rifles For Watie

This book by Harold Keith is about young Jeff Bussy during the uncertain times of the American Civil War. A unique fact about this novel is that it’s not too “mushy” for boys, and there’s enough story line for girls to enjoy. This would be my main source of information on the Civil War (along with one or two school books), and the captivating story line will keep you reading till the wee hours of the night. I really appreciate the way the author looks at both sides of the war, and you can get the full picture in a concise, but engaging fashion.

Sir Nigel

Lol, I don’t have the book, so this is the best representation I have. 🙂

I’m not sure this counts because I’ve only listened to it off LibriVox (an excellent audio resource by the way), but it is still amazing! We all know Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Sherlock Holmes, but did you know that he wrote this medieval historical fiction?

The novel is about an impoverished, but noble, young squire: Nigel. His family has been killed by the Black Death, but through several acts of bravery, honor, and many absorbing adventures, he finally “Wins his Spurs”.  Also, this book has a lot of good history about the French and English hundred year war, and the Black Prince Edward of Wales mixed in, but it doesn’t take away from the appeal of the story.

So, that’s my favorite 4 fiction’s! (not fantasy or sci-fi… that’s a topic for another time 🙂 I hope you can read these sometime, because they are wonderful books!!!
