A Set of Hands

I got a good look at a set of hands today – fine specimens too. Evidently, by their sinewy appearance, they belonged to a young active man. The fingers were long and lively; at one moment fluffing up his hair, or exercising their fine motor skills by picking up a pencil or grooming their nails, keeping them nice and clean, but rather blunt.

The thumbs are amazingly agile, and can text just as fast or faster then the modern kid.

These appendages are nearly always moving, depending on the owners mood, When mad they ball themselves up into fists, tight and angry. Or they can be lazily flopped about if bored. When excited every muscle quivers the delight, the fingers twitching about till the feeling dies off or they are distracted by something else.

One thing these hands do beautifully is play guitar. In perfect harmony the palm of one 20191114_134623.jpghand grasps the neck of the instrument, while the fingers firmly place their calloused tips on the strings for a clean, beautiful chord which gets strummed out by the other hand. Fingers fly through a familiar Spanish folk song in perfect tempo, or softly, lovingly, caress out the stirring notes of an old hymn.
This is only a little of what I saw of these hands, and they were still quite young. How many, many things hands can do! How hard life would be without them. The Psalmist declared “Blessed be the Lord my strength which teaches my hands to war, and my fingers to fight.” (Psalm 144:1)

How fearfully and wonderfully made are we!

Hands

Hands are common enough,
Among the inhabitants of earth,
Some are soft some are rough,
Some are skilled in making mirth.

Hands are used at times to speak.
Hands are waved to meet and greet.
Hands may tell their owners trade –
How they work or what they’ve made,

Some are perfumed and are oiled,
Girls’ are painted on the nails.
Farmers are used to dirt and toil,
Milkmaids are hardened to carrying pails.

So, do you not see!
Hands are a marvelous tool for thee,
To praise thy God on high,
For your hands are always nigh.
