The aspen have turned gold, and lost their leaves, the pond is icing over, winter is coming!

To prepare for the end of fall, and the coming of the snow, we have had some work to do!
This year we needed 10 tons of hay! So we found an affordable source of nice grass hay in big 4x4x7 square bales- the animals won’t go hungry!
Father and Matt spent a week cutting logs to supply our firewood, then the girls helped
them load and un-load, and stack all 4+ cords of wood. You definitely get warm three times working with wood
The garden has been harvested, it’s bounty stored, and finally tilled under for spring planting. This year we finally got our fall garlic planted, so we will see how that goes! All the fruit has been harvested, and our shelves are lined with rows of canned apples, pickled garlic, and delicious pears.
The animals have also been bedded down. Their stalls have been layered deeply with straw, the goats have put on their winter coats, and are already sleeping in as the days get longer. The ice on the water trough is broken, then it is refilled with new water daily. Every week, Matt, on the tractor, gives the flock a new bale of hay, which they always enjoy.
The ram is in with the ewes, and we are expecting lots of lambs in April! The buck is coming over soon, so hopefully the goats Gingersnap, Sparrow, and Magpie will kid in June!

The dogs love the snow, and it doesn’t hinder their gopher digging a bit! Only Lady is a little worried when her ball turns into a snowball… 🙂
Now we are ready, and waiting for the snow!
